Detroit 2008: BMW X6
Now that the Detroit 2008 motor show is under way, it’s no wonder that everybody is talking about which cars are making their debut there. One of the most anticipated of those vehicles is the BMW X6. First shown as in concept form, it will be presented as a production model at Detroit 2008.
Comparing the production model with the concept its hard to see any difference in terms of appearance, so obviously BMW are convinced that potential customers were happy with the idea of a BMW X5 baby brother which looks even more sporty and actually quite aggressive. The guys at autoblog have been to Detroit 2008 and have posted some more information.
With the clumsy “xDrive” model nomenclature comes Dynamic Performance Control, which is BMW’s rear axle torque vectoring system. Unlike traditional stability-control systems that work by applying individual brakes (and thus subtract torque from a given wheel), this system supplies additional torque to individual drive wheels via a complex network of clutchpacks and planetary gears in the rear differential. We’ve yet to drive a vehicle of this mass with such a system, but according to what we’ve heard, it has the effect of making a large car feel much smaller.
With a top speed of 250km/h it can manage 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds. The BMW X6 will be available from June.
