Speed King: 85-Year-Old Ontario Driver Arrested
Welcome back!!! We had a great time this holiday and hope you did too. Now, after a much deserved rest, we are ready to return to posting news and links on the world of cars.
And what a better way to start the New Year than with a post which will might make you chuckle.
After Ontario, Canada, drafted a law that has brought in new legislation to fine for speeders on its highways, the risk of financial punishment doesn’t seem to be deterring so many wanna-be racers. And that’s even though anyone driving more than 50 km per hour over the posted speed limit faces a fine of up to $10,000.
If that wasn’t enough, they also face having their license suspended and their vehicle confiscated for seven days. One of those already caught for speeding under the new law is an 85 year old driver stopped by police speedometer after hitting 161 km per hour.
When asked why he was driving so fast, the man’s answer was somewhat quite simple. “I just was going to the bank and then shopping,” he apparently said. A few minutes later he was saying goodbye to his driving license and vehicle for seven days.
And he’s not the only one. autoblog reports Since the law took effect on September 30, 2007, 2,300 over 1,300 Canadians have met the same fate in the first five weeks.
On average, every day 24 drivers have to learn bus routes, and 24 cars get parked somewhere for a week. The 85-year-old gent has the honor of being the oldest arrested so far, a 16-year old girl was the youngest, and the fastest driver was going 230 kph (142 mph).
So, a word of warning. If you decide to visit Ontario anytime soon, then leave your Ferrari at home or any other vehicle that can exceed 60 km per hour, for that matter. It might take you longer to reach your destination, but you will definitely save yourself the risk of a fine of $10,000.
