Improving Motorcycle Performance

Improving Motorcycle PerformanceIf you are the proud owner of a new street bike, you’ll want to do everything necessary to increase its performance, even if it entails using aftermarket motorcycle parts. Below are three helpful tips to consider when customizing your motorcycle.

Tip 1: Replace the stock exhaust system.

Stock exhaust systems are often clunky and therefore, weigh down the motorcycle. You can substantially increase the performance of your street bike by replacing the stock exhaust system with an aftermarket performance exhaust system. A lighter exhaust system with very good flow will earn you higher horsepower because they are generally more efficient, depending of course on the design and construction materials used. By all means, make sure the performance exhaust system you choose, the headers at the very least, is made from titanium. Naturally, aluminum is another metal to look for in the solid, heat-resistant construction of the exhaust system. You may also see improvements in torque as well. Realize that the trade off for increased performance is worse mileage, but if you want to go fast, the amount you spend on gasoline is not going to matter much.

A less-costly but beneficial alternative is to implement a slip-on system, which basically entails changing the muffler canister rather than the entire exhaust system. You may not get the full performance you would expect from an aftermarket exhaust system, but you will at least shed several pounds for a lighter ride.

Tip 2: Brakes, brakes, brakes.

While you’re slowing down your street bike you want to be sure you can stop it at a moment’s notice. There’s no telling what conditions you’re going to run up against while on the road, and you may be a situation where you have to stop suddenly. Take the precautions by using the proper street bike parts. Start by replacing the brake lines, brake pads and brake rotors. If you are using rubber brake lines, switch them with stainless steel ones, since rubber is prone to expansion under duress. Brake pads are even more important—they have to provide maximum stopping power. Go for compound pads, for instance those composed from ceramic and graphite. And consider aluminum or stainless steel wave rotors since they are resistant to warping in high heat.

Tip 3: Maintain proper tire pressure.

This may sound like a no-brainer, but when you’re busy riding it’s all about the tires, after all. Make sure you always pay attention to the PSI levels. Obviously the higher the pressure, the firmer and more stable the ride.
