Diesel Engines: Cleaner And Stronger Than Ever

Diesel Engines: Cleaner And Stronger Than EverAs we have already discussed hybrid vehicles in Hybrid Vehicles Save World From Pollution blog, now I would like to introduce diesel vehicles to you, since they are becoming more widespread in automotive market today. Both hybrid and diesel engine cars are alternative-fuel vehicles and are designed to exhaust less pollution.

Today’s diesel cars can’t be compared with the one’s in 1970s’. At that time, diesel engines were awfully noisy and exceedingly, for lack of a better word, smelly. Since then, diesel engines have greatly developed and now they are as clean and as quiet as gasoline engines, for the most part.

Diesel and gasoline engines look very much alike, but their work differs greatly. A gasoline engine uses an ignition system for evolving electricity to kindle a mixture of gasoline and air by means of spark plugs in the cylinders. While diesels have no inflammation and use produced heat by squeezing air in the cylinders to light injected fuel into the cylinders. Diesel engines, as a rule, are built much stronger, as they use higher compression ratio to accomplish the above mentioned task. That’s why diesel engines, that are the same size as gasoline engines, provide more power. The reason for this increase in power is also the denseness of diesel, which means that it contains more energy. In addition to these advantages diesel engines can reach their maximum power at low engine speeds.

Pros of Diesel:

  • You get about 30 percent better fuel-economy than gasoline powered cars.
  • Many diesel engines have a reputation for permanence, as they are built with heavier components to resist high pressure.

Cons of Diesel:

  • They are, as a rule, more expensive than similar gasoline-powered models, and diesel fuel costs more than regular fuel.
  • New models that use urea injection to diminish emanation must have the system of refilling with each oil change.
  • Though diesel is becoming more and more popular with drivers, it is still only available at about 30 percent of U.S. gas stations.

However, even though it costs more and is not as widely available, diesel is, nevertheless, the cleaner and more powerful choice in fuels. Also, bear in mind: with each driver choosing the diesel engine, the environment becomes less and less polluted and sullied.
