Mazda Furai
Mazda’s popularity is growing by the day and fast proving itself to being a serious competitor for its rivals. One factors in the continuation of that might be the Furai concept presented at the Detroit Auto Show.
Furai, which means “sound of the wind” in Japanese, is based on the Courage C65 racing chassis from the American Le Mans Series. The first thing that makes you sit up and take notice is its astonishing exterior. It is obvious that time was spent during design in making the Furai as aerodynamic as possible.
Power for the Furai comes from an three-rotor engine which runs on E100 Ethanol and develops 450 horsepower so it’s not only the aggressive exterior that makes it stand out from the pack. Instead, the engine hidden under hood which compliments the exterior very well.
MOTORTREND reports that it was built during a very short period of time.
Furai was developed in an exceptionally short amount of time for a concept. It was birthed in the early summer of 2007 and since then von Holzhausen’s team has run the gauntlet at a Furai-ous pace (couldn’t resist) to get the car in running condition. With no time to test around the busy design-department schedule, everyone from the clay modelers to the MazdaSpeed engineers were basically crawling over one another to get the car done.
See how the Furai looks in action.
