BMW GINA: More Than Just A Concept?

BMW GINA: More Than Just A Concept?Concept cars are usually made to impress people as well as to show the strength and creativity of the manufacturer. On the other hand, concepts also introduce later production models.

However, in the world of concepts, while there are many original models, none can perhaps compete with what BMW has created. The concept, GINA (Geometry and Functions in ‘N’ Adaptations), can change its shape. Sounds impressive, right?

Actually GINA looks like the BMW Z4, but you better prepare yourself to see the way doors open or lights appear. Designers managed to get beyond their imagination by making GINA completely out of textile fabric. Here’s what AutoBlog reports.

The skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices and can actually move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be exposed or hidden by the car’s skin just like blinking eyes, and the hood opens from the center as the fabric parts to expose the engine.

So the idea is to make visible various parts of the car only when the driver needs them and also to change the shape of a car. The same is true for the interior as well. For example, seats can automatically change shape to provide more comfort.

Although GINA has a lot things to impress us, it alsoo has a bad side as well. No one will have the opportunity to own one as it will instead be directed to the BMW museum where it will undoubtedly be considered the father of all concepts. Here is what Leftlane reports.

While a production car with such stretchable body panels is not likely to make it into production any time soon, Bangle says the experience helped BMW’s stylists push the envelope with steel forming in its products.

You’re right! I did have to watch that video a couple of times. That was really cool. It sounds like an idea a kid would come up with and the adults would say, “You can’t do that!”.
