F1 License Plate Sold For $870,000
When you own a supercar such as a custom made McLaren Mercedes Benz SLR then it must be difficult to think of something else to spend your money on to make it just a little bit different. Pretty much everything is included in the price, but Afzal Kahn, head of the Kahn Design and Project Kahn managed to find something. He bought a F1 license plate at auction for $870,000.
This F1 plate was registered in the UK more than a hundred years ago and very definitely Afzal can consider his car different to all the other McLarens out there. In 2006, a M1 plate was sold for $650,000 so Afzal also beat the previous record although it remains to be seen for how long he can enjoy that honor. Next year the A1 license plate will go up for auction. As the oldest registered plate in the UK, who knows? It might go for $1 million.
According to Auto Blog F1 plate was used on a Volvo S80 owned by the chairman of Essex County Council.
F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone and former F1 driver Eddie Irvine had tried to snatch it up in 2005 at Goodwood, but failed to meet the reserve.
Anyway, for that price Afzal could buy another McLaren and still save some money, but I suppose being different from others and owning a part of automobile history comes first.
